For a number of years I have read many books and watched many movies about mental illness, mental health recovery and addiction.

I also was a movie addict, watching every movie about mental illness that I could find desperately searching for answers that might help me. I no longer watch a lot of movies about mental illness, but do still watch them occasionally. My favorite movie is The Legend of 1900. Have you seen it? It’s a movie about fears and piano playing.

Over the past 10 years, I have read books and studies about how our physical health ties in with our mental health. For many it is more of an, “of course, our brains are part of our bodies…). For me, I have had to hunt down many answers to my mental illness/psychiatric diagnosis as too many of the medication side effects affected me greatly.

For those of you who don’t know me well, I treat many of my physical health problems as well as my mental health problems by modifying my diet and other health routines. I’ll be glad to steer you to the resources that have helped me the most and the ones that have helped me get the farthest on my journey. I have tried many diets, some helped me become less ill, some helped me become more ill. But again, this is me. Just because something worked for me, doesn’t mean it will work for you.

There have been a number of things I have read that haven’t worked for me. As I have time and energy, I will be glad to tell you what I know of what hasn’t worked and why. Most of the best help I received wasn’t from books written by psychiatrists, nor was it from books written by other professional treatment people. I have learned much from people who have taken the time to share their recovery journey and what worked.

Someone once asked me why I write sites like this one. Frankly, it’s because for me there were no solid answers when I needed them. When i asked people to help me, they would walk away or tell me that I could figure things out on my own. By people not being willing to steer me in the right direction, I would guess that I stayed more ill than I needed to for about 15 years. Too many people focused on meds as the best and only answer. Too many people focused on treatment and not putting enough focus on how to get me a life I could enjoy.

I don’t want that to happen to you so I will share. I very strongly believe in informed choice. Informed choice is where you have all the information you need to make a decision, not just the information that a treatment professional wants to share with you because it will make their life easier to not share something they don’t feel is in your best interests.

These pages will come together slowly. There will be affiliate links to purchases. I don’t plan on getting rich from this site, but it does need to become able to pay for itself. I really don’t want to take money from the government on an ongoing basis other than from organizations that have given me a reason to trust them. I really can’t take money from a pharma company. Meds are both good and bad and i really don’t want to feel that my voice is tied up because they are paying me.

All Types of Mental Illness can benefit from Mental Health Support

Types of mental illness such as bipolar, depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, borderline personality, and others are painful to those who suffer with the diagnosis. These illnesses are real and can be life threatening. They are a biological chemical disorder of the brain.

What makes finding help so hard is the stigma that is so highly associated with it. We are made to feel as an outcast in society. We are made to feel it is a weakness of our character and that it is our choice to be ill. We are told to pull ourselves up by the boot straps and get over it.

What I want to accomplish in my web site is to give back hope. I do not want anyone to feel the pain I have felt due to my own diagnosis of depression and anxiety. Those who do not suffer from the illness are not always able to really understand what you or we are going through and/or how to help. This is understandable because they haven’t a clue. It takes one to know one and “I AM YOU!”

Who am I? I have a BA in Public Administration because I want to be a public servant and what better person to serve, but you.

In addition, I am a nurse who worked on a mental health unit at an area hospital for five years. I was given the title of “Top Ten Nurses of Cedar Valley” in 2005 for my advocacy and for the empathy and hope I gave to my patients which many I now consider my friend.

I also have been with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) for at least the past ten years which includes the national, state, county, and college levels. I was President of NAMI UNI (University of Northern Iowa) for three years which is a college affiliate providing support for students on campus.

Just this year I became a member of both the Commission of Persons with Disabilities and Protection and Advocacy for Individuals with Mental Illness (PAIMI) both in the State of Iowa where I reside.

Last, I am very active politically educating congress/legislators to make policies to provide parity (equal) insurance and any other equal treatment for those with illness no matter which type it might be and/or to what degree.

This web site is meant to answer questions you might have and to find the hope that is not always provided elsewhere. I will also include a section to help family and friends to understand how they can assist us if needed. Too often they are more stigmatized than we are and too often just want the problem to be resolved or to just go away.

Mental illness is for life. It doesn’t just go away, but with education and support it can be managed so we can all live well with a mental illness. This is what I want to help you find through all my experiences both good and bad so you do not have to experience all the excruciating pain and embarrassment I have had to endure to get me to where I am today. Many new studies have proven that antidepressants can have many harmful side effects and indicate that maybe they aren’t as helpful either. Some of the symptoms include heart attacks, strokes, added behavior problems, and addiction. Often this is the result of rather than taking the time to find a effective treatment for the individual mental illness, they simply throw drugs at the symptoms and hope that it works with limited observation. It’s easier when they have no canned solution… Therapists have been realizing that proper therapeutic techniques applied as a result of listening to their patients better is often better than drugging their patients.

Since Genesis, mental illness has been a part of our lives. As early as Cain and Able, Cain’s obsessive behavior combined with his jealous outrages lead to him killing his own brother Able in cold blood. He wanted attention in a way that he didn’t receive and lashed out to take it. Adam and Eve had many problems consumed with trying to survive chaotic happenings.

Throughout the centuries, many have followed Cain’s path, and others went further off into more deadly paths. For many things, often for money or in hatred; many become predators on earth. The results have been horrid, in ways such as mass murder, mutilation, dismemberment, and widespread slaughter at its worst. Today much is still based in these sorts, just not as large in their occurrences (hidden well and covered up).

Mental illness comes in many forms, and none of them are exclusive from the rest. Deeply rooted in them are jealousy, envy, resentment, anger, hatred and many other issues. These can cause all sorts of problems that can escalate to long-term problems that are deep and can even cause physical problems if not dealt with well. Everybody experiences this, however some more than others. In all events, they help develop our daily habits and our behaviors.

Often mental health experts will contribute to the problem by prescribing drugs that either cause additional problems, or bury the problem, leaving the patient learning to live simply with the problem buried (as long as the drug is used). The intension of the drugs is to control mind processes and behaviors. Antidepressants are a large amount of these. Some are dangerous to stop cold turkey once they have been on them. Effexor XR for example stopped immediately can lead to suicidal tendencies, violent outbursts, impulsive behavior to the extreme, and more. Digging up the buried problems just catches up with the time since it was buried, adding new additional ones. In some cases, antidepressants have proven to bring on heart attacks, and cause bone degeneration. In addition they have been attributed to increased likeliness for drug and alcohol dependency.

In terms of help, one person helping another has historically proven invaluable. Unfortunately many think that only those that have degrees have the answers, and many of the mentally ill people know that the experts are making many mistakes. They live with this every day. The blame goes in the wrong direction though, and not where the mistakes are happening. A lot of it is in one nation under one rule, and they do little to encourage improvements in this area as well.

One good historical example that shows a lot of the rest of this article is the rampant use of the drug Ritalin in the 70s and 80s, as a common treatment for Hyperactivity, and Attention Deficit Disorder. Keep in mind; the patients have even indicated the problems before bigger problems occurred though weren’t listened to. Instead of being helped in the beginning, many of these simply get contained as lesser beings in the end.

Many pet owners dread the news that Rover or Kitty are seriously ill or injured.  Too often, an anxious pet-lover is forced to make a fiscal decision when veterinary care is needed, and quite a few have had to endure the heartbreak of saying good-bye to a beloved pet that could be saved — but only at a cost prohibitive expense.  To many of us, a pet is a member of the family.  Treated sometimes like a child, the animal is companion, friend, confidante, and even dinner guest!  It is no surprise that the insurance industries realized the advantages of this widely untapped market, and fortunately for us pet lovers, health insurance for pets is no longer a wished for ideal, but a new reality!

There are some similarities to health insurance for humans; for example, be sure to read the fine print!  The most common misconception is the myth that all the distraught pet owner needs to do at the time of an emergency is to present an insurance card, and no money changes hands.  Nothing could be further from the truth!  As a matter of fact, most pet insurance plans will require the pet’s owner to make an upfront payment at the time of service.  Later on, a claim may be sent to the insurance company, and a reimbursement is made.

Many plans cost as little at $30 a month, but it is imperative that the pet owner understands the scope of coverage.  Minimum cost implies minimum coverage.  For example, one major pet health insurance plan will cover the same illnesses and emergencies at different plan levels, yet those who choose to purchase a minimum plan will receive less of a reimbursement than those who choose a more expensive plan.

In addition to the foregoing, pet insurance is not without its complications.  For example, benefits are limited when it comes to an initial diagnosis.  While your veterinarian may charge $150 to examine Rover’s bite wound after he had a run-in with the neighbor’s Doberman, the insurance plan will only cover about $92.  If Rover needs to undergo anesthesia, the insurance is willing to pay and extra $44, but will not pay any more.  In addition to the foregoing, if the bite wound is considered a secondary diagnosis, and Rover is instead treated for a puncture wound, then the coverage for the bite wound is reduced to only $65 in its entirety.  On the other hand, if you choose to purchase the higher level plan, then a similar situation will result in the reimbursement of $154 for the examination of the bite wound, $74 for anesthesia, and $108 in case of the bite wound’s being a secondary diagnosis.

Some pet owners don’t think that such coverage is worth the money, but they had best think again!  While a pet is young, veterinary visits are few and far between, but once Rover ages, new problems crop up.  Additionally, if Kitty begins to venture into the great outdoors, the risks and potential for injury increases.  Also, it is noteworthy that pet health insurance does not only cover the catastrophic injuries, but even the mundane dental cleanings, shots, heartworm medication, flea prevention, and more.

In closing, concerned pet owners owe it to their furry (or feathered) friends to ensure that adequate care will be available in case of an emergency.  Yet, they owe it to themselves to become well educated in the multifaceted aspects of pet insurance, and the exclusions and limitations. To this end, here are some suggestions:

1. Understand the deductible

The pet’s age and even pre-existing conditions may change the deductible the plan applies.  Additionally, a co-payment may be charged that can run as high as 20% of the veterinary fee.

2.  Understand the exclusions

Just like human insurance, pet insurance too has exclusions.  They may vary from company to company, and often deal with pre-existing conditions. Other exclusions may apply to dental care, vaccinations, etc.

3. Know the caps

The insurance plan will only pay a certain amount per covered incident.  Discuss hypothetical fees with your veterinarian and find out if these caps are realistic.  Additionally, are these caps applicable to a lifetime treatment, or to a per-occurrence charge?
